The redesigned 2017 Ford Fusion will feature an impressive performance cohort called the Fusion Sport, which Ford is hoping to use to steal away customers who normally shop German sedans like Audi or BMW.

So what does this American sports car have to offer that rivals do not?

Fusion Sport soars above the competition with 380 pound-feet of torque, as well as an impressive 325 horsepower. All-wheel drive comes standard, for road-gripping handling in all conditions.

Superior technology has always been a point of pride for Ford, and the new Fusion lineup has 20 available semi-autonomous driver assist features, including the Sport-exclusive pothole detection and mitigation system. Ford's new and improved SYNC 3 communication and entertainment technology with advanced voice recognition is, naturally, a standard feature.

As for pricing, Ford Fusion marketing manager Wade Jackson says, "Cross-shoppers will be shocked by the bang for the buck our new Fusion Sport delivers." According to Ford, it has the power and refinement to appeal compete directly with "distinguished German models that command a five-figure premium over the 2017 Fusion Sport."

If class-leading engine specs and advanced technology are not enough to tip the scales, there is one final straw that might.

Cup holders.

"Being dissatisfied with your cup holders may be a minor annoyance, but it's a daily one, which over time detracts from the overall car experience," said Jolanta Coffey, Ford body interior manager. Drivers who are used to German-engineered models know this minor annoyance well.

"On the other hand," she continues, "when you like your cup holders, they can make your vehicle feel like home. For Fusion, we set out to develop a beautiful interior, paying attention to the details that make people fall in love and stay in love with their car."
